Ask an Expert - Forum > Adhering Yupo to Itself

I am working with large pieces of yupo-painted with diluted acrylic paint and waterproof ink. The pieces are 40"x20 feet...I want to hang them as banners and need to Loop the top of the yupo piece to insert a 2" wood dowel. My question is what is the best adhesive to glue yupo (with a thin stain of acrylic ) to itself to handle the weight of 20 feet ?
(also is there another alternative? ;Hand sewing? & rivets?)

Thank you!

Hey Terri,

Thanks for contacting us about your issue. Using adhesives on Yupo gets tricky since the substrate itself is non-porous polypropylene. That being said I have three suggestions for you.

1) If you do not care about the integrity of the piece you can just wrap the Yupo around the dowel and then staple the two together. With the weight of the large sheet this will ensure that your piece does not come crashing down.

2) Using a strong/thick adhesive such as YES paste or Tacky Glue. Tacky Glue was recommended for holding heavier loads. Since these adhesives are more paste like it bonds to itself rather than soaking into the substrate. You would use the Tacky Glue to create the loop you described and adhere the Yupo to itself.

3) You could attempt to adhere a cotton based paper to the Yupo piece first and let dry. This will now provide you with a porous surface to adhere to the dowel.

Option one is the sturdiest option. You may want to increase the white border at the top. That way you can just cut the staple holes off when you no longer need to hang it from the dowel.

Unfortunately I can not say with certainty that any adhesive would bind Yupo to itself and remain bound under the weight of a sheet so large.
