Ask an Expert - Forum > Pens and YUPO

I am an artist using alcohol ink markers to illustrate transparent Yupo. I would like to accent fine details with a type of black permanent ink pen. Do you have any recommendations for types of pens that will not smudge on Yupo? All of the fineliner pens I have tried will smear, including waterproof and pigment based pens.

We reached out to the artist Sandy Sandy (www.sandysandy.com) for her feedback:

For Watercolor - I actually like to use a black ball point pen when I'm doing watercolor on top of it.
You still have to be careful not to smudge it. Sometimes I burnish a paper towel over it
to remove some of the excess ink.

Ink takes a while for ink to dry on Yupo, (because it doesn't soak in). I also test w/ paper towel
pressed down on inked surface to see if it's completely dried.

For Alcohol ink - You really can't put ink down ahead of time, because the alcohol will reactivate
any permanent ink. I actually haven't tried ball point first when doing a.i. I do my pen work at the
end. I personally like the Black Pilot Twin Marker and the Signo Uniball Angelic or # 153 white
pens the best for a.i. detailing.
