Ask an Expert - Forum > For etching - an incisioni replacement

what is now the best paper available for etching? I was a great fan of Incisioni 310gsm and need to find something just as good, now that paper has changed

A few options as an Incisioni alternative. As you know, Incisioni is a hard, smooth sheet. These should work well for you:

Coventry Rag Smooth
Stonehenge Aqua HP
Saunders Waterford HP
Lanaquarelle HP

Samples are available here or you can email orders@legionpaper.com

@Legion
WM was asking for an etching paper. Why would you propose watercolor papers instead of printmaking grades. Waterford is surface sized and therefore useless.
Any mould made printmaking paper from 50% cotton or above (Incisioni was 50%) should be a good alternative.

Hi @John - you're correct about Waterford not being the best substrate for printmaking due to its external sizing. Our web team who answered @WM concentrated on the similar surface characteristics between Incisioni and the aforementioned HP watercolor papers as they all have a smooth and rather hard surface. However, for printmaking applications, some better papers would be:

Rives BFK
Pescia
Zerkall Copperplate

We apologize for an confusion

One addition - there are many printmakers who use watercolor papers for etching, knowing that they must soak the paper for a longer period of time as the paper is surface sized.
