Ask an Expert - Forum > Ideal paper for silkscreen 27x27

I have a project coming up and need paper for silkscreen. I would like to work with a square size of 27"x27". What papers would you suggest?

There are three factors that you must consider when choosing a paper for silkscreen; sizing, texture and dimensional stability. If your print requires multiple layers you should use a paper with surface sizing which keeps the ink from sinking deep into the paper. When it comes to texture, a smooth paper is optimal as you will get the sharpest image detail. The final factor of dimensional stability refers to the ability of a paper to handle humid environments. A paper with high dimensional stability will not expand and contract to the same extent as other papers when exposed to moist conditions.

There are three papers that come to mind for silkscreen; Coventry Rag, Arches 88 and Stonehenge.

Coventry Rag which in a smooth and vellum as well as weights of 250gsm, 290gsm and 320gsm. This paper has superior dimensional stability and can take multiple layers of ink while still producing a crisp image.

Arches 88 is a premium cotton paper that also offers fantastic dimensional stability and has a much whiter white point than Coventry. It is also offered in weights of 300gsm and 350gsm making it one of the more solid silkscreen paper out there.

Stonehenge is the ultimate workhorse and will take many layers of ink. It is a 100% cotton paper and is offered in sheets, pads and rolls and also offers a diverse color portfolio.
