Ask an Expert - Forum > Steel Grey buckling

Hi,

This is another question about buckling/warping…

My studio is quite large and gets extremely cold over night. I like using Stonehenge in Steel Grey and attach it to a board with tape or staples. If I stretch the paper(like Stephen Bauman does) the paper is perfect flat and it isn’t an issue but if I don’t then by the next morning the paper is buckled. I would prefer not to stretch the paper.

Are there any tips for preventing this while I work on the drawing over a number of weeks? Perhaps completely wrapping up/covering the board that has my paper attached in a blanket each night? Or maybe taking the board/drawing and putting it in a cupboard in my bedroom each night which is a bit warmer?

Also, does stretching the paper have an impact on the sizing coming out or texture of the surface? I have noticed the different colours have slightly different textures too.

Thank you 

The main reason for paper to buckle is either a dramatic change in temperature, humidity or both. Both temperature change and humidity cause papers to expand and contract which can lead to fiber damage and buckling. The best way to store your fine art paper is in a climate controlled environment. We know that this is not an option for everyone and the next option is to try and store the paper where it will experience the least amount of temperature/humidity change.

Stretching will not affect the sizing of the paper but excessive soaking times will decrease the amount of sizing in the paper. An important tip if you choose to stretch the paper is to make sure that the paper is not over stretched. The paper should lie flat but overstretching can lead to tears once the paper starts drying and naturally contracts. Overstretching can also lead to surface fibers pulling and breaking.
