Ask an Expert - Forum > Yupo cannot be mounted archivally

Hello, I have come to the conclusion after MUCH research over a long time that Yupo cannot be mounted in a reliable, archival way. Many use gel medium on board, which is fine if all you are doing is keeping the art or selling it for cheap, but it is not permadent. I did a two year expereiment with that and it eventually started lifting. Golden also says it doesn't work. If we are selling art for any decent amount of money I feel we should be responsible and have integrity and insure our works stand the test of time.
There was an extensive article about a professional mounting expert who did much testing and suggested that dry mounting will work, yet in my research I found an artist who had done so by a professuinal mounting shop and eventually it lifted.
In my opinion, Yupo is a great product for playing around but I think it needs to be said that so far, no one (that I have encountered can mount it archivally. So rather than do many paintings as I did and find this problem out, now you know.
I am open to hearing of any long term successful mounting options that artists have found to be good. I have many fine paintings that are just sitting in my studio that I cannot sell and would love to have a solution.

Hi Jay,

We are currently conducting an extensive study of various archival adhesives that are compatible with YUPO. We hope to share the results in January. Having said that there are a variety of adhesive, archival materials that can be used, depending on the mounting process. Please have a look at the first article on the FAQ page:

Thank you, this is good news. If there is a way to inform me of the results, please do so, I have a show at an Asian gallery in March and would love to include some of the Yupo paintings if there is proper archival mounting avaialble.
The suggestions on the link you sent I have read before but, in my perception, perhaps I am not clear, they all seem rather iffy, there is a lot of a "this might work" about it. The glue gun will not work becuase a glue gun puts out strips of glue and you need an even coverage. Same with the tape, there will be lifting on areas around the tape I would assume. I did get a can of the PUR adhesive but once I read ther warnings on it for fumes I sent it back, it is dangerous.
But I am hopeful and very open to something that will work. Please, if you can, let me know how I can find out your resilts when you have them.
thanks,
Jay

Yes, we will publish the results on our website and we'll paste them to this thread. Please remember that we are only experts in paper and not with mounting solutions. We always defer to framing experts when we receive inquiries about framing best-practices with paper because we simply don't know all the tools available to properly frame - or how those tools will affect the paper over time. The study we are conducting in association with Yupo will cover a variety of materials and adhesives that are used to mount Yupo to a variety of substrates and materials. Please also bear in mind that many of the adhesives may not be suitable for non-commercial applications (ie need for ventilation or special tools that professional framers have at their disposal), which does not disqualify them as solutions to properly mount YUPO.
