Ask an Expert - Forum > Crease in Yupo Paper with heat gun

Hello,

I've only been working with yupo paper and alcohol inks for about 6 months, and I recently bought a heat gun which I used for the first time this weekend. I created 3 art pieces and the largest (A4) completely wrinkled after the ink dried. The smaller 2 (A5) wrinkled a little, but once in a frame it is hardly noticeable. I just wondered if you knew why my paper was creasing so much? I put some heavy weights on the larger A4 one and even ironed it, but unfortunately reading your other responses, I think i have dented the paper way too much.

I am creating more art this weekend and wondered if you had any advice? my heat gun only has one setting and it is quite hot, do you think that is the problem? any advice is much appreciated :)

Since YUPO is made from Polypropylene it will melt when exposed to high heat. Here is a useful chart outlining the optimal temperature range:

While working with alcohol inks one doesn't really need to speed up the drying time with a heat gun as the alcohol dries so quickly. The heat gun comes in handy when working with watercolor paints. And only then is it advisable if you need the painting to dry quickly. I assume you have been using a heat gun on all the works you describe above? I ask because the YUPO paper will never crease or buckle much when just allowing the paints/inks to dry by air.

Finally, it's also best to ensure you're using branded YUPO paper as there are a lot of knock-offs on the market. Make sure the pads or packets of paper have the registered YUPO logo as seen on our website www.legionpaper.com/yupo

Hello - firstly, thank you for replying so quickly.

I initially was using a straw/ hand blower and my paper was completely fine. I preferred the finishes I was getting with the heat gun, so it was more about the look rather than the drying speed, but I think you're right its too hot for the paper.

Thanks - i'll check that the yupo paper is the real one.

Have a great day!
