Ask an Expert - Forum > Cabinet Card stock

I am looking for Cabinet Card stock paper, 4 1/4 by 6 1/2 (108 by 165 mm) I think Heavy Weight Triplexed 100# Stock, something that emulates the Cabinet Card formats. I collect, scan and restore old photos for the Peoria Historical Society, and would like to make new prints, and put on modernized Cabinet Cards. Know of anything that might work or if not any suggestions? :) Thanks!

The *only* guy I know that does this as a real thing, mentions, "Heavy Weight Triplexed 100# Stock"

----------------

"The cabinet format was designed to recreate the success of carte de visite photographs, which were produced in the millions worldwide beginning around 1859. In the United States, business at photography galleries slowed after the Civil War, and the trade began looking for a new product. The answer came from Britain, where a similar business slowdown led F. R. Window of the London studio Window & Bridge to suggest the cabinet format in 1866. In England, The Photographic News championed the new format; in the United States, The Philadelphia Photographer campaigned for its adoption. Manufacturers also benefited from the new format, selling lenses, printing frames, mounts and albums designed for cabinet cards. Like the carte de visite before it, the cabinet card format became an international standard; cards produced in Bombay or Yokohama would ft albums in the parlors of Edinburgh or Chicago. The format remained popular into the early years of the 20th century." — Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography, John Hannavy

Chris,

We're reprinting the email exchange we had offline here in case others are interested. Not sure if we can be of help unless we can see the paper you're trying to match. We have hundreds of 100# cover weight stocks. If you can source a cabinet card and send it to us we'll do our best to suggest some papers that best match the texture, weight and color.

Maybe someone on this forum can supply a sample?

Well "samples" are collection material, actual historical objects, if find a duplicate or one damaged, might be able to source. But if any antique store in the area, they should be able to point you to a Cabinet Card, or someone local maybe might be able to hopefully drop in. Bristol Board then press board, finally to cardboard, stiff durable thick 200 to 300 lb. levels, to which a photo was glued.
