Ask an Expert - Forum > Can Yupo be glued down to rag board with PVA glue?

Can Yupo be adhered to Rag board with PVA glue, and stay stable? I have experimented with some small 10 x 13 sheets, which I paint with acrylic and then collage. Gluing onto sheets not mounted seems to created warping of the Yupo. I successfully glued one small sheet to 8ply rag, then put into a book binding press overnight. It seems to have adhered nicely, but my framer is dubious it will hold.

Hi Paula,

This is quite a common question we receive, yet the answer is usually unique and requires testing like you have mentioned. According to the manufacturer Yupo, you should use PVA Emulsion AC-500, EVA Emulsion, SP7 (Konishi), BA-10E (Chuo Rika) and EH-004 (Nitta Gelatin). Double sided tape is also an option depending on the weight of your art.

We also suggest using a strong/thick adhesive such as YES paste or Tacky Glue. Tacky Glue was recommended for holding heavier loads. Since these adhesives are more paste-like it bonds to itself rather than soaking into the substrate. The only issue you may find here is that the surface will not be completely smooth.

Below is an URL that will direct you to YUPO’s suggested binding techniques. We would love to hear what process worked for you in the future to help other artists and creatives like yourself.
