Ask an Expert - Forum > Paper Finishes, Laid vs Wove

If art paper is not laid, does it automatically qualify as wove? Or are there other descriptors besides laid and wove?

There are many different paper finishes available besides laid and wove. A laid paper is a type of paper having a ribbed texture imparted by the manufacturing process. You can easily see the uniform lines going across the paper. A wove paper describes a paper with a uniform surface, not ribbed or watermarked.

A wove paper can come in other surface types like smooth, vellum, eggshell, linen, felt, suede and textured.
