Ask an Expert - Forum > Taping paper

I use tape to make borders when painting with acrylic on paper.

On some papers, when the tape is taken off, a thin layer of paper is lifted, creating a raised “bubble” on the paper, or completely removing that layer.

For example, this happens sometimes with Stonehenge Hot Press.

What 100% cotton Legion paper can stand up to taping best and also works well with acrylic paint? Thanks

Stonehenge Aqua can be susceptible to surface fibers pulling when removing masking tape. There are a few ways to prevent this from happening which can be viewed at the link below.

For a specific brand of tape we recommend Holbein's Soft Tape. We selected this product as the best masking tape for Stonehenge Aqua after various tests from watercolor professionals. Soft Tape combined with the suggestions in our past post should prevent the pulling you are experiencing.

It seems to be less of a problem on regular Stonehenge White, Rising Museum Board and some other hot press WC papers I've used.
