Although Rives BFK is an archival paper, we do not recommend using oil paint directly on Rives BFK or any unprepared paper. Most oil paints use linseed oil, which causes paper to oxidize and will ultimately break down the paper.
If you wish to oil paint directly on paper without gesso, we recommend Stonehenge Oil. Stonehenge Oil is a 100% cotton paper produced with a proprietary formula that allows artists to work directly on paper without any preparation. Stonehenge Oil paper will not deteriorate over time and the oil paint will not bleed through the paper.
If you wish to use Rives BFK, we suggest coating the paper with gesso to protect the integrity of the sheet.
