I purchased a Stonehenge Aqua Black panel and I am wondering if I gessoed the paper I would be able to use it for oil. Or if that would tear the paper over time. Or if I could take the backside of it and gesso that and use that instead?
We don’t recommend using oil paint directly on Stonehenge Aqua Black because it isn’t treated for oil media. Over time, the oil can break down the cotton fibers.
Gesso can protect cotton paper fibers from oil. Many artists will apply gesso when they want to paint on oversize, thick papers. Because the back of the panel is aluminum, a nonporous surface. We can’t say how gesso would perform on that surface.
For white paper that’s pre-primed for oil painting, Stonehenge Oil needs no additional preparation or gesso. Its oil barrier protects the fibers over time.
